The Orthodox Christian Brotherhood of Guests are welcome, though only men can be accomodated over-night (prior arrangements are a must).
Located in the heart of the Lower East Side of New York City, Mercy House ministers to the poor and homeless. The monastery has facilities to provide a bed, clothes, and meals, in a substance abuse-free environment, for up to 10 men who are in alcohol/drug abuse recovery or just in need of a temporary living situation until they "get on their feet". Enrollment in a recovery program and abstaining from drugs and alcohol is a requirement for those in temporary residence. Mercy House also provides food and clothes distribution.
A small congregation worships regularly with the monastics (upwards of 30 people on a regular basis), and English is the predominant language of worship (though some Slavonic, Greek, Spanish, Romanian, etc. is used when the constuency warrants it.) A monastic daily cycle of services is kept following the usage and practice of the Russian Orthodox tradition. There are currently two monastics in residence.
